Palmaria palmata
Dulse is a vibrant red seaweed with leathery palmate fronds, thriving in cool North Atlantic waters along rocky shores. Revered as a superfood, edible snack, and skincare gem, it brings a mild oceanic flavour and mineral-rich profile. It is prized for its hydrating minerals and soothing, protective marine compounds

“Harvested from shifting coastlines, it reflects a balance between strength and fluidity.”
Benefits
Dulse stands out in skincare for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and deeply hydrating properties. These stem from rich veins of polysaccharides, polyphenols, peptides, and minerals like iodine, magnesium, and iron. Together these nourish the barrier, brighten tone, stimulate collagen, and detoxify for resilient, radiant skin across all types.

History
Dulse's use dates to ancient coastal folk in Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, and Canada, where it fuelled warriors for stamina, prevented scurvy on voyages, and healed wounds via antibacterial poultices. Traded since 1606 at Ireland's Auld Lammas Fair, it endures as a nutrient-dense tradition now revitalized in modern marine skincare

Cultivation
Dulse favours exposed rocky shores with strong currents, cool temperatures , and moderate wave action for nutrient flow. Sustainable picking targets mature fronds in summer low tides, allowing regrowth. Emerging aquaculture uses rope lines in clean waters mimicking natural conditions

Harvest & Extraction
Fronds are picked at low tide in peak summer growth, sun- or low-heat-dried to preserve nutrients, then milled or extracted. Water or solvent pulls bioactive polysaccharides, minerals, and polyphenols into hydrosols or powders for potent, ocean-fresh skincare infusions
